Snow Much to Discover: Winter Wonders in Science Enrichment
China Primary School’s Science Enrichment students with Mrs. Paquette dove into the fascinating world of snowflakes this winter. They explored how snowflakes form through the process of nucleation and examined the different categories of crystals, including dendrites, plates, and needles. Students also learned about the life and work of William “Snowflake” Bentley and his pioneering snow crystal photography.
Along the way, they uncovered fun and surprising facts—such as the largest recorded snowflake, measuring an incredible 15 inches in diameter and 8 inches thick! Their studies extended beyond snowflakes to discussions about animal adaptations for winter and survival in Arctic climates.
To culminate their learning, students tackled a snow-driven STEM challenge. They chose to design a safer sled, improve winter road travel, or create a more effective and efficient way to clear snow and ice from driveways. Using the STEM design model, students developed detailed plans, built scaled prototypes from recycled materials, and brought their ideas to life.
The project concluded with creative advertisements showcasing their inventions—and plenty of laughter as students performed their commercials. It was a season filled with innovation, discovery, and snow-inspired fun. #WeAreRSU18 #CPSdragons
